Prompt for 2010-03-20 Mar. 20th, 2010 @ 07:04 am
[personal profile] seanlily
Today's prompt is "taking back what's mine"

The Very Very Appropriate Icon Mar. 20th, 2010 @ 09:28 pm
Tom the Baby Accompanist* and I are going to be participating in a lieder masterclass tomorrow.

For those not conversant with this sort of activity, a masterclass is where one comes and sings and then the "master" (ie very experienced person) takes the whole thing apart and then slowly puts it back together bit by bit; and hopefully the whole song ends up better than before.

Other people come and watch.

It's something like that odd show where that guy in the hat dissected corpses on TV.  Except we dissect music instead.  (also at the end of the process we reassemble the song, rather then having things floating in jars.  I hope.)

Other singers will go under the microscope (scalpel?) as well, so hopefully it won't be too painful.  Also, there's another singer/pianist pair as well as Tom and I, so I shall watch with interest what is said to them.  We are sixth out of eight performers.

AND NO I AM NOT AT ALL FREAKING OUT ABOUT GIVING "CACILIE" ITS FIRST OUTING IN A FREAKING MASTERCLASS WITH OPERA LUMINARIES PRESENT.  not at all. nope.

*ahem*

Details (if you are in Melbourne and have an interest):

DATE: Sunday March 21st    TIME: 1pm - 5pm
VENUE: Studio 1, Opera Australia, cnr Fawkner & Fanning Streets, Southbank (behind Arts Centre) PRESENTERS: Brian Hansford & Julia Nafisi
PARKING: Australian Ballet Centre
Ticket prices are as follows - ANATS and Lieder Society members: $30 Non-members: $45 Students/Concessions: $25

*so-called because when he first sauntered in to play for one of my singing lessons, he was just an ickle first-year music student.  He is, however, six foot five with arms that stretch out as far as an albatross's wings, lanky, somewhat hairy, addicted to yoga, a country boy but very newagey, and a complete dag.  Not overly baby-like, and yet the tag just won't go away.

Mixed Topics again Mar. 20th, 2010 @ 10:57 am
♥ After finally getting my hands on all episodes of the series - thanks to [personal profile] mareen - I finished watching Avatar: The Last Airbender. I'm going to start re-watching the series now, but first I simply had to make icons from one of my most favourite episodes. The Dancing Dragon move was so beautiful!

Dancing Dragon Pose 1 Dancing Dragon Pose 2 Dancing Dragon Pose 3 Dancing Dragon Pose 4

♠ The cats have a new hobby. For the last three days they have been abducting my clothes. First it was only socks, but now they take away sweatpants, t-shirts and pullovers, too, leaving them all over the flat.

♣ Finished reading The Lightning Thief and liked it a lot. I was a little bit surprised how different it was from the Percy Jackson movie, though. I mean, I expected changes, but for this movie they seemed kind of extreme. I still like the movie very much, anyway. *g*

♦ It's rainy outside and my allergies have calmed down a bit. The last three days were almost unbearable, even with the additional meds. But right now I feel good enough to get some things done. Like doing the laundry and some basic cleaning and baking a chocolate chip cake.

Still Waters by [livejournal.com profile] kellychambliss
Minerva McGonagall/Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank (with guest appearances by Amelia Bones, Augusta Longbottom, Neville, and Trevor), light R. ~ 7,000 words.

In 1995, Albus Dumbledore invites Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank to serve as a substitute professor of Care of Magical Creatures. Will isn't sure she should accept, but she thinks it over while sleeping with a unicorn. (No, not like that! What's wrong with you?)

I think what I love most about Still Waters is that it's a story about the friendship between two adult women. Wilhelmina and Amelia know each other so well, and they share their life in a way lovers can't. It's good to see a friendship like that in fanfiction. I love both their characterizations, Wilhelmina's down-to-earth attitude, the way she cares about animals, and Amelia's bossiness. But I shouldn't forget that Still Waters is also a love story. It's exciting to see the plot slowly unfold, it has a lot of a mystery. Let's just say that Minerva is her stubborn Gryffindor self, which doesn't make things easier. She's also incredibly sexy in her lacy chemise.

There are wonderful illustrations that show Wilhelmina as a butch with a heart. Just look into her warm eyes. Beautiful!

Could You Be A Little Less by [livejournal.com profile] the_birdnest
Rita Skeeter, Pansy Parkinson, Hannah Abbott, Gabrielle Delacour, Hermione Granger, Ginny Weasley, Luna Lovegood, Tonks, Asteria Greengrass, Padma Patil, and Minerva McGonagall. PG-13. 1,406 words.

You can tell a lot about a society by what it values.

Priceless examples of Rita Skeeter's special kind of journalism (which, of course, is all too common in the real world). The author captures her style perfectly. It's highly entertaining and thought-provoking at the same time, and very, very clever. Love it!

So much bullshit I'm not even sure where to start... Mar. 20th, 2010 @ 03:05 pm
You know, I wish I lived in a little bubble...I wouldn't mind being able to eat food on the street and not worry about getting parasites or food poisoning so bad I have to be flown to Singapore. I'd love to be able to count on routine surgery not killing me. I guess I should join this guy's version of the Foreign Service to do that...

Also, is he saying we don't go, or we don't engage? Both are a load of bullshit!

Fic-Privileging on Fanlore and Limitations to Fannish Diversity Mar. 20th, 2010 @ 01:08 am
[personal profile] kylara
Following a discussion in Talk:Tentaclefic, RatCreature suggested bringing the topic up in the community to raise awareness of the issue and hopefully get some more input on what to do about it. The topic began with the suggestion that the "Tentaclefic" article, which address tentacles in fandom and fanworks more broadly than just fic, be renamed to incorporate other mediums of fanwork. This expanded into a broader discussion on what to do about other such named articles and fic-privileging on Fanlore.

I'm mostly from anime/manga fandom. From the discussion it seems that fic is the core of many Western-sourced fandoms which would explain the fic-centricism on Fanlore. Fic is also important in anime/manga fandom, but quite a lot of activity is also focused on visual mediums such as fanart, webcomics, and manga-style doujinshi. Tropes aren't limited to written fiction, and fic-centered terms are not as prevalent.

I'm concerned that when topics (such as tentacles) have articles with fic-centered instead of inclusive names, that this works at the exclusion of other mediums of fanworks. I would like to see more anime/manga information brought into Fanlore, and so far the inclusion has been rather limited (which could be for a number of reasons besides). Still, I would like to see Fanlore remain welcoming to expansion.

So how about it? Ideas on how to be more mindful to non-fic fanworks? RatCreature's also looking for ideas on how to rename topics like "wingfic," "apocafic," and others which are not inherently fic-centric.

don't call me darling Mar. 20th, 2010 @ 03:11 am
I can forgive a lot (okay, up to a certain degree) when it comes to storylines between a man and a woman, because I know an author can only push the gender structures so far before the average reader would start to balk. That's just the internalized part of our society. (Most societies, not just Western, so I don't think it's a massive over-generalization.) What I can't forgive is when an author is trying to tell me a character has a dominant personality, but picks the wrong way to illustrate this, and ends up writing the character as a jerk, instead.

Recently was reading a story by an author who otherwise usually seems to have a decent sense of characterization, if an only adequate sense of plot. Not always the most complex, but a good handle on pacing and a deft hand with psychology can make up for the lack of severe twists, and besides, I suppose not everyone reads for unexpected twists. Plus, this author usually does a pretty good job of exploring the psyche in power exchanges, whether these are the implicit kind or explicit as in BDSM. But a recent release by the author had me gritting my teeth, because one tiny detail underlined every way in which I think a person is not being dominant, and instead is just being a prick.

It's all in the nickname.

Main female character, we'll call, hmm, Elizabeth. A solid name, if a little formal, but not that unusual. In narrative and in dialogue, the character is referred to as Elizabeth through most of the story, and introduces herself as Elizabeth, as well. (I believe there's even a snippet of dialogue where her manager calls her by her full name, as well.) In walks Mister Dominant, who's been wanting a chance to convince our dear Elizabeth that he could be The One.

And then he calls her Bethie.

No, she corrects him, it's Elizabeth.

He just smiles... and spends the rest of the story calling her Bethie.

Dear reader, I wanted to punch him. )

Oh damn was that close Mar. 20th, 2010 @ 01:50 am
So... my flight to Baltimore is on the 23rd at 11:59pm. I wrote it down as the 24th. If I hadn't noticed that I'm supposed to be speaking on Thursday I would have completely missed my flight! That was way too close for comfort.

Fortunately, I still get out at 5 so I can meet Fred at 6 for dinner and fighter practice.

Also the flight got changed and is no longer nonstop. I now have to stop in Atlanta. Let met tell you, it will be hard to get onto that second flight and not go running home to mommy, lol! But I'm pissed off, since half the point of going to LAX instead of Ontario was so I could have a nonstop flight and so I could get to DC early in the day. Now, instead of getting to Baltimore at 7am, I get to Atlanta at 7am and have to get on another flight to get to Baltimore at 11am. And then I have to get into DC which is like half an hour. So like 1 by the time I get everything done at the airport. I'll probably still go to the museum though for a few hours.

[002] There was a big assignment recently where we had to transform ourselves into a deity or well known fantasy creature. Had a couple of ideas but in the end lack of time led to me just doing a photomanip of myself as a woodland faerie. Was happy things generally worked out even with the lack of creativity though ^^ Y'all can see the final version here

[003] BREAK TIME, YAAAAAY - tomorrow I'm going to finally have time for my layout reboot \o/ Coding, woot! But first, a grocery trip for some fresh fruit :F

[004] Is it sad that when I see a rec on my flist for Draco/Dean, I immediately wonder about Draco Malfoy topping Dean Winchester? *FACEPALM*

Rise up, Witches, throw off your masks Mar. 19th, 2010 @ 11:59 pm
So while I breathe this glorious air, an outlaw I'll remain;
My body will not be subdued and I will not be saved.
And if I cannot shout aloud, I'll sing it secretly,
My skin, my bones, my heretic heart are my authority.

I've been posting a lot about religion recently, mostly with a fannish twist that pushes the posts into "meta-discussion" rather than "spiritual revelation" or outright proselytizing. (Almost nobody believes me when I proselytize anyway. People giggle. And they think that if I made them laugh, I can't be trying to convince them of anything.)

It has been a hard month. Mar. 19th, 2010 @ 11:34 pm
And being of English descent, we resort, in bad times, to tea. A prelude:

These are my contributions for tomorrow afternoon. Wee miniature scones and a recipe for "pizza pinwheels" that is the only thing I remember from the required cooking class we had to take in secondary school. (Mine, of course, are much more delicious than what Mme. Brown taught us to make. I use four cheeses.) I convinced [profile] artemisiabrisol to sacrifice one in order to photograph it with crabapple jelly and clotted cream that we can only find, evidently, at Safeway. (She was, it must be admitted, not all that difficult to convince.)

First day of work went rather well. New job consists mainly of walking two somewhat-beyond-middle-aged adults through the dark and scary Internet, giving a crash course on how to use Gmail, organizing files, mucking about with photostreams, translating from their web designer into English, that sort of thing. I work again on Tuesday. Basically this is what I do at home in my spare time, except now I'm getting paid. Hurrah!

...really looking forward to the tea, though. So glad this week is over. o.O

On rewatching SG-1 episode 115, "Cor-ai" Mar. 19th, 2010 @ 11:03 pm
click here for funky body paint and some deeply stupid villagers )

So that was more emotionally powerful than I remember, although marred by some fairly stupid logistics that made the plot weaker than it should have been. It would have worked better if the Bursa were living in the only inhabitable valley in the area, or had some other constraint that made them unable to move further from the Stargate.

What's up next? Oh, "Enigma". That's the Tollan and NID and Sam's cat, right? Pfeh.

[community profile] camelot_fleet is having a party. When? Then.

*Anticipates new Morgana and Gwen fan buddies!*

I depend on you to keep the party rockin', my friends, as party-time is pre-crack o' dawn Sunday for me.

Things I picked up from Follow Friday:

Today I am a Darkover book - ee hee hee hee ! It is not inconceivable that both arrived at the evil catman idea independently.

Great post and discussion on racism and misogyny and SPN and SGA that hasn't devolved into apologetics and/or show bashing.
